Spring Rain Falling Soft on Central Park

Spring rain, falling on the south east corner of The Pond in Central Park, New York.

The warm sunshine of Memorial Day faded quickly with grey skies and soft rain covering New York today. This picture was taken from the south-east corner of Central Park, overlooking The Pond.

What do you like to do on rainy days?

Spring Fling

And a bird overhead
sang Follow.
And a bird to the right
sang Here.
And the arch of the leaves
was hollow.
And the meaning of
May was clear.
- A.C. Swinburne

Hyacinths and daffodils bloom in the spring at Herald Square in New York City, May 2013.

After living in the Big Apple for one whole year, I have now experienced four complete seasons - and trust me they are very different from the sub-tropical (Brisbane/Rockhampton) and temperate (Sydney) climates I am used to in Australia.

I fitted right in during summer; I was fascinated by the leaves fall during autumn; and the novelty of snow got me through my first northern hemisphere winter (it was tougher than I expected!).

But if you ask me what my favourite season is in New York, it would have to be spring.

The poem and photo above help me describe the joy. Brilliant, clear sunshine; crisp, fragrant air, avenues bustling and alive with blooms; with the friendly song and chatter of birds playing amongst the leaves.

Sure, there have been some chilly days and some rainy days, but overall, May has been a very necessary, not to mention absolutely delightful wake from my dark winter slumber.

And the the best thing about spring? It means a glorious summer is right around the corner!

Wherever you are, what's your favourite season?
